Toilets
So, I've found a need for this post. I've been asked this way too many times and I thought I would clear things up for anyone else who might still be wondering.
Many of you have heard that the water in toilets in Australia flows the opposite direction when flushed. This question was brought up by a Simpsons episode. Well I am sorry to inform you that no, the toilets here do not spin the opposite direction. Actually all of the toilets I've seen don't swirl. The toilet bowl has a LOT less water in it to begin with than the standard American toilet bowl so the water doesn't swirl it's just all forced straight down. Well how about a sink or bathtub drain you might ask? Sorry again. It's pretty easy to look it up on Youtube (many people have tried this exact same thing), however for the sake of science I asked my good friend back home to flush a toilet and tell me his results. It was reported to spin counterclockwise. I then headed into my kitchen and tested it in the sink. I must report it also spun counterclockwise. I am sorry to destroy all of your hopes and dreams on this matter.
Fun fact for the day though, toilets here have two button instead of just one lever. One is a "half" flush and one is a "full" flush. I'll leave it up to you to figure out what the intention is for each of them.
