No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems
I just wanted to tell you all, I went to the beach today for the second day in a row. It was gorgeous. I got some sun. Be jealous :) Now on to the actual post.
Many people have been asking for me to write a post on all of differences between here and back home. Well here it is. This will probably just be one of many of these... and they will all probably be just random things thrown together.
Obviously, from my title, you can probably tell that rules on proper clothing attire are a little different here. While most of the time people do wear shirts, shoes are more of an option. Now, I don't mean people go out to the bars in the Sydney CBD (central business district) without shoes, but when running general errands, it's not uncommon to see the occasional person walking around barefoot, from just walking down the street to getting groceries, shoes are not a necessity.
Slang. So much slang. More often than not I have to be the idiot who has to ask what the heck that word means. Australians love to shorten things and add vowels on the end.
Footy = Football
Cocky = Cockatoo or Cockroach (which are everywhere)
Other differences in language
Maccas = McDonald's
Soz = sorry
Arvo = afternoon
Cheers = thank you (most often followed by 'mate')
Bottle-O = liquor store
Prawn = Shrimp (so no, you don't have shrimp on the barbie)
Also, they say heaps to describe everything. "This cab ride is heaps far." ; "Aww heaps late, it's not a problem." ; "It's heaps cool."
Alcohol...
Fosters. All I heard about before I came over was Fosters... Australians drink Fosters. Sorry to burst your bubble America but they don't. I've actually never seen a single person drink Fosters. And what I've heard of Fosters, it's absolutely awful. I've seen quite a few different beers, both foreign and domestic (Tooheys New is just one I can think of off the top of my head at the moment) but no Fosters. I actually saw someone drinking Budweiser last night. Now, alcohol in Oz is really expensive, so when you're young and poor you drink Goon, which is really horrible boxed wine. Everyone has drank Goon at least once, and I've heard many different opinions on it. Many have some very fond memories of Goon and will always enjoy drinking it, many others hate the taste of it (but drink it anyway if they're feeling poor). But again, sorry, no Fosters.
Well that is all for now. I will continue to post differences in posts like this, and probably within other posts as well. I apologise in advance if I repost anything but there's so much it'll be hard to remember.
